After another relatively quiet showing as France beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-0 in their 2022 World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, Kylian Mbappé spoke about the effects of criticism, the rest of the league and Champions League season and his future at Paris Saint-Germain.

Faced with a feisty Bosnia and Herzegovina side in Sarajevo on Wednesday, France had Antoine Griezmann to thank for the goal that clinched the 1-0 win and kept France atop the 2022 World Cup qualifying Group D standings.

Wagging tongues

However, as was the case after the draw 1-1 with Ukraine and the 2-0 win in Kazakhstan earlier in the week, many media sources characterised the World Champions' performances as lacklustre - something Mbappé, who came in for a fair amount of criticism after being effectively marked out of the Ukraine match and missing a penalty against Kazakhstan, admitted takes a toll.

"Of course it's tiring, especially when you play for a club in your home country, when you give everything for your national team... At some point, it gets tiring, yes," he told RTL. "It's different for players who play abroad, who only come back to France for the national team. I'm here all the time, so there's a lot more talk. But I knew this context when I signed for Paris."

Future still undecided

Is this critical climate enough to influence his choices concerning his future at Paris Saint-Germain, where his current contract comes to term in June 2022?

"We'll see what happens next. Of course the criticism plays a role. Still, it's not the only factor," explained the in-demand 22-year-old, who is regularly linked with moves to the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool. "The most important thing is to feel good where you are and to enjoy yourself every day. If there had been progress concerning a contract extension, I would have already come to talk about it. I will do so when I have made my decision."

'Didn't have time to recover properly'

As France boss Didier Deschamps had done several times in the last week, Mbappé explained that the fact of having three matches in a week - in a period during which Paris Saint-Germain and many other clubs have been playing every three days - and having to travel as far as Kazakhstan, impinges on players' capacity to perform consistently at the highest level.

"It's hard, with the packed schedule, the jet lag, the long journeys... We didn't have time to recover properly. That had a bit of an impact on the show we were able to put on. People didn't get the enjoyment they were supposed to get," he admitted before accentuating the positives. "But we're here to get points, not just to please. We managed to take seven points out of nine, which is promising."

Unfinished Bayern business

Mbappé will now put Les Bleus on the back-burner, with plenty of very important business - notably against the mighty Bayern Munich - to take care of before Euro 2021 kicks off on 11 June.

"Our next big objective is the Euro. But, until then, it's back to club business to finish the season well," he declared before turning his attention to the 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich in last season's UEFA Champions League final. "It really hurt us. Now the context is different, with a duel over two matches. They are a great team. We will give our best to try and get through, even if before that there is an important league match [against Lille on Saturday], which is another priority objective. And then we will really take stock at the end of the season."
