Olympique de Marseille drew 1-1 with Atalanta in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League semifinal tie on Thursday night at the Stade Vélodrome. The result sets the stage for a winner-take-all second-leg match in Italy next week.

Atalanta had four total shots in the first half against Marseille and the Italian team opened the scoring in the 11th minute, courtesy of a goal from Gianluca Scamacca. Despite the visitors taking the early lead and grabbing momentum, it wouldn't last.

Marseille, who also had four shots in the first 45 minutes, leveled the scoring thanks to a Chancel Mbemba goal from outside the box in the 30th minute. After a thrilling first half, both teams headed into the locker room tied 1-1.

Over the last 45 minutes, OM asserted dominance in their attack, showing greater intensity. Despite Jean-Louis Gasset and his team registering a total of ten shots, they couldn't find the back of the net to secure the lead.

The Serie A team only had four total shots as Gian Piero Gasperini and his team couldn't beat Pau Lopez to take an advantage back to Bergamo. The first leg ends 1-1 as the scene for the tie shifts to Gewiss Stadium for the final 90 minutes.

Atalanta or Marseille securing a win, regardless of the score, will see either team advance to the Europa League final in Ireland at Dublin Arena, but a draw will force extra time to determine a winner.

Les Phocéens find themselves in their second semifinal within three years in a UEFA competition. Back in 2022, the French team made it to this stage of the UEFA Europa Conference League but couldn't advance to the final, losing to Feyenoord. Now, OM aim to redeem themselves this year, but it won't be easy, especially needing a victory away from home.

OM won't be playing this weekend, so the Ligue 1 team can fully concentrate on the crucial second-leg match against the Serie A team next week. Atalanta has a match against Salernitana on Monday, and once that's over, they can shift their focus to Marseille.
