Jonathan David has found his scoring touch with Lille since the turn of the year netting five times in 2021, and the Canada international told The Ligue 1 Show his coach, Christophe Galtier, is the man who turned his fortunes around.

David arrived from Gent in the summer to replace last season's leading scorer Victor Osimhen, but did not find the net in his first 10 Ligue 1 Uber Eats matches. Since, he has found the net seven times in 15 top-flight outings, including four goals in eight matches in 2021.

“I’ve started to score more than I was at the start of the season. I’m feeling more confident. Even though I wasn’t scoring before, I had the chances to do so. Now when I get the chance, I take it, and that’s made the difference!" said the 21-year-old, who paid tribute to the faith Galter has shown in him by picking him in every league game to date.

“He would tell me that even when I wasn’t scoring I was doing good things on the pitch. I work very hard to help out defensively, I run into space to take defenders with me and free up my team-mates. The coach really helped me!”

David struck 18 times to finish the Belgian league's top scorer last season, but was sluggish out of the blocks after making the short trip across the border.

“He arrived lacking form and carrying some extra weight. He needed time to adapt, time to get back to his physical best!” said Galtier. “We noticed that he was steadily scoring more and more goals in training. He’s looking more relaxed in front of goal. He knows what he wants, and now we’re seeing the Jonathan that we spotted in Belgium, who looked stronger, more deadly and technically smart!”

“He got a fair bit of criticism, especially in the early weeks, because he wasn’t scoring enough, but we never doubted him," added experienced midfielder Benjamin André. éHe’s always on the move and working hard for the team. We’re very very happy that his efforts are now being rewarded. He deserves it, he works so hard for the group. He’s on the right track, let’s hope it keeps going because he’s a great player, I know he’ll score plenty more goals!”
