Monaco rose to third place in the Ligue 1 table following their 1-0 win over Stade Rennais on Sunday at Stade Louis II.

Both teams started the game in impressive form, with each side taking nine total shots in the first half, but Adi Hütter and his team scored the first and only goal of the match.

The goal came from 22-year-old Maghnes Akliouche in the 25th minute, giving Monaco a 1-0 lead. Rennes' chances to level in the second half took a massive hit as Martin Terrier received a straight red card in the 64th minute.

Rennes would finish the match playing with ten men, but so did Monaco. Thilo Kehrer, who received a yellow card in the first half, was given a second yellow card in the 64th minute to level the players out on the pitch.

Julien Stéphan and his team couldn't find the equalizing goal and lost their third straight match across all competitions. Les Rouge et Blanc are on an impressive run recently, having not lost in their last six league matches (four wins and two draws).

Monaco trails Stade Brestois by one point for second place in the race to secure an automatic UEFA Champions League spot. Brest and Monaco will meet on April 21 at the Stade Francis Le Blé with the winner having a chance to have the upper hand.

Rennes' recent defeats in their last two Ligue 1 matches have dealt a blow to their hopes of clinching a spot in European competition for the next season. Les Rouge et Noirs currently trail Nice by five points in the fiercely contested race and will aim to snap their losing streak next weekend against Toulouse.
