Kylian Mbappé says Paris Saint-Germain must "beat the best if you want to be the best" as they prepare to face Bayern Munich in Sunday's UEFA Champions League final.

While Bayern could go joint-third with Liverpool FC on the competition's all-time winners' list if they claim a sixth continental crown in Lisbon, PSG are aiming for their very first Champions League final triumph.

The world record purchase of Neymar Jr in 2017 and the arrival of Mbappé the same summer signalled PSG's intent to force their way into the exclusive group of Europe's elite football clubs, a place victory in the Estadio da Luz would secure.

"It's exactly why I came here. I wanted to mark the history of the country. Sunday's match will be the occasion to do that. The club has had some disappointments, and on Sunday, it'll play a Champions League final. We've not given up. Winning this competition with a French club would be super. I came here for that, it would be an achievement. Is Paris Saint-Germain a big European club? Sunday will be a good opportunity to get into the company," explained Mbappé.

"Playing against [Manuel] Neuer, one of the best goalkeepers in the history of football...I've trained, I've always dreamed of it. When you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. We'll have to play our game and we'll see after that what happens, but I hope to bring the trophy back to Paris. I'm happy to play against a big team like Bayern, and I'm looking forward to Sunday. The more the days pass, the better I feel. It did me good to play the semi-final. I hope to be in the best condition possible on Sunday."

PSG would become only the second Ligue 1 Uber Eats team to be crowned European champions if they triumph, emulating arch-rivals Olympique de Marseille, who won the competition by beating AC Milan in 1993.

Despite the stakes, Mbappé — part of France's 2018 FIFA World Cup-winning side — is approaching the biggest club fixture of his career so far calmly.

"Before such a game, I think you have to be relaxed, very focussed on the important goal, but relaxed. It's a final. The squad has to stay close, united. We all have to go into the final together, and once we've done that, we mustn't go out of it. On matchdays, I watch a film, I call friends...I don't do anything special. Sunday will be a day just like any other until 19.30 when I'll have to get into the game," explained the 21-year-old, who acknowledged victory would end an historic 2019-20 season with an equally unprecedented quintuple.

"It is the biggest club competition, after all. Playing in this context is peculiar, because we would have liked to have done so in front of our fans, but we know they're supporting us at a distance. In spite of having to play behind closed doors, there is a special kind of atmosphere...You can feel the tension! Everyone wants to win the Champions League. It's a special format that's due to a tragedy, so it's a very special year because everyone will remember it."
