Former Paris Saint-Germain player Kingsley Coman shattered the UEFA Champions League final dreams of the Ligue 1 Uber Eats title-holders as Bayern Munich took the continental crown with a 1-0 win in Lisbon on Sunday.

THE MATCH

The return of Keylor Navas, who had missed the semi-final win over RB Leipzig through injury, was the only change Thomas Tuchel made to his PSG line-up, opting to keep the fit-again Marco Verratti on the bench.

The German coach saw his side give at least as good as they got from the German champions in the opening 45 minutes at the Estadio da Luz. Much had been made of Bayern's formidable attack that had scored 42 times in ten competition appearances this season, but it was PSG's star forwards who threatened first as they looked to set a new scoring streak record in the competition at 35 matches.

Played in on the left side of the penalty area, Neymar's low shot almost squirmed under Manuel Neuer, and when the ball broke for the Brazilian again, the Bayern goalkeeper blocked his attempted cutback from the very tightest of angles (18').

Robert Lewandowski had been closely watched by Thiago Silva and Presnel Kimpembe, part of the PSG defence that had conceded a competition-low five goals before the final, but hugely prolific Bayern striker still managed to carve out opportunities.

On a competition-leading 15 goals before kick-off — just two shy of Cristiano Ronaldo's record 17 of 2013/14 — Lewandowski came within centimetres of a 16th when he swivelled and sent a bouncing shot off a post with Navas beaten (22). The Costa Rica international brilliantly denied the Pole soon after, pushing out a close-range header (31') to keep the Ligue 1 Uber Eats title-holders level.

The Parisians should have been in front at the break, however. Kylian Mbappé's pace had posed Bayern a number of problems, but when Ander Herrera gave him a return ball in space inside the box, the FIFA World Cup winner could only shoot tamely at Neuer (45').

PSG deserved credit for stopping Bayern scoring in the opening half for the first time since the restart, but just before the hour mark, they cracked. Paris-born Coman, who made four Ligue 1 Uber Eats appearances for PSG after coming through the club's youth academy, found space behind Thilo Kehrer to head across Navas and register Bayern's 500th UEFA Champions League goal (59').

PSG were rocked and Bayern upped the pressure. Only a brilliant Kimpembe clearance prevented Lewandowski turning in a Coman cross soon after (61') and Coman then miscued a volley after again finding space inside the penalty area of his former club (62').

PSG eventually recovered from the blow, and tried to hit back. Mbappé might have done better with a teasing cross into the area (67') and Neuer used his legs to block a Marquinhos shot after the Brazil international had burst into the box (70').

Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting, whose cameo had turned despair to delight in the quarter-final against Atalanta, came off the bench with little over ten minutes remaining, but the Cameroon international could not change the outcome this time as Bayern lifted the sixth European crown in their club's history.

THE PLAYER: Presnel Kimpembe

Alongside Thiago Silva for the final time in the Brazilian's PSG career, the France international stood up well to the challenge of facing a Lewandowski playing the best football of his career. His headed clearance denied the Bayern forward a second and kept French hopes alive until the final whistle.

THE MATCH: 41

PSG were the 41st team to play a Champions League final, and the seventh successive debutant to taste defeat on their maiden appearance in the showpiece.
