With the Africa Cup of Nations on the horizon in 2024 and dozens of Ligue 1 Uber Eats players set to represent their countries in Côte d’Ivoire, we continue a special series featuring the legends of the game from several of the countries that are participating. Today’s feature focuses on Zambia.

Stoppila Sunzu: FC Sochaux-Montbéliard 2014, LOSC Lille 2015-2018 and FC Metz 2018-2020.

Sunzu is the most historic player from Zambia to play in Ligue 1. He started playing in Ligue 1 in 2014 when he joined Sochaux with his compatriot Nathan Sinkala. Sunzu made his international debut for Zambia against Botswana in a 2009 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. One of his most important moments in his career is scoring the winning penalty in the final of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations when Zambia won the competition. He had a huge performance that year that he was able to make it into the CAF Team of the Year.

Other Zambian players that have played in Ligue 1:

  • Jacob Mulenga: Played with RC Strasbourg Alsace for 22 games in the 2007-2008 season.

  • Emmanuel Mayuka: Played with FC Sochaux-Montbéliard in the 2013-2014 season with 21 appearances and 4 goals.
