Marseille striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang officially became the highest goal scorer in the history of the UEFA Europa League after his strike against Shakhtar Donetsk last night.

Olympique de Marseille qualified for the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League last night with a second leg win over Shakhtar Donetsk (3-1), and it offered a landmark moment for striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who became the outright top-scorer in the competition since its re-branding in 2009.

After drawing level with former Monaco striker Radamel Falcao in the first leg, the former Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona man's strike against the Ukrainian side was his 31st goal in the competition - placing him above the rest in the UEFA Europa League scoring charts. The Marseille number 10 is also the competition's top scorer this season.

Better than the rest

Aubameyang has had to surpass former Ligue 1 Uber Eats legends such as Falcao, Kevin Gameiro and former Arsenal teammate Alexandre Laccazette for the accolade. Yet, Auba still has to beat the record of Henrik Larsson in the previously known UEFA Cup (31 goals). The Gabon international will be able to achieve that this season, with OM facing the prospect of Villarreal (managed by former boss Marcelino) in the round of 16 of the competition.
