Amine Gouiri has called time on his association with the French national-team setup. After representing France at every youth level, the 23-year-old Rennes striker has officially opted to play his senior international football with Algeria, the land of his parents' birth.

'A new chapter'

Amine Gouiri has a total of 74 caps for France's youth teams, including 31 appearances and 12 goals for Les Espoirs (U21).

"The years I spent in the French national team will remain with me forever," read a statement on Gouiri's X profile. "Thank you for everything. The time has come to start a new chapter."

The fact that Algeria will be in action at the upcoming AFCON in Côte d'Ivoire (13 Jan - 11 Feb) - and be real contenders to clinch the trophy they won as recently as 2019 - doubtless played a role as this French-born binational became the latest in a long line of players that includes Riyad Mahrez (Al-Ahli), Houssem Aouar (AS Roma), Rayan Aït-Nouri (Wolverhampton), Farès Chaïbi (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Badredine Bouanani (Nice).
